80s Fancy Dress – Madonna
Not only was Madonna the queen of 80's pop, she was also a style and fashion icon. So when there's an 80's party in the offing, it's no surprise that Madonna outfits are in high demand. Every girl wanted to look like her then and what better way to dance the night away than wearing a Madonna outfit. When you think of Madonna in the 80's, you see the large hooped earrings, the bleached blonde hair with roots unashamedly showing and tied in a ginormous bow, fingerless lace gloves and just loads and loads of bling. There you go, I hope this has given you some ideas.

Madonna in the 80’s
Madonna is the biggest “pop” star of all time and has been called “The Queen of Pop”. She has dominated the music and video scene since her inception in the early 80’s. Madonna’s always changing persona, music and style, has kept her at the top of the game for a quarter of a century. Madonna explores religious symbolism and sexual themes in her work.
With the release of “Borderline”, people started to take notice of this young very talented star. In 1984, Madonna’s “Borderline became her first top 10 hit song. When Madonna performed her “Like A Virgin Song” at the MTV Music Video Awards she rocketed to instant stardom with her highly sexual performance while dressed up as a bride.
In 1985, Madonna took on the stage and starred in her first film; Desperately Seeking Susan. This movie was a box-office hit and launched her film career. By then, Madonna’s fan base was teenage girls who idolized her style and persona. Teenage girls had adopted her trademark appearance from the film.
With the release of “Papa Don’t Preach, Madonna again challenged taboo and controversial subjects. This song battled the pregnancy while not being married issue. Another song/video that caused much controversy for Madonna was the “Like A Prayer Video’. This video was banned by the Vatican due to portrayals of stigmata, sexuality and religious symbolism. This was definitely not the end by far. In 1990 The Blonde Ambition Tour depicted a highly theatrical show featuring both religious and sexual themes. This highly controversial show paved way for her “Truth or Dare” documentary of behind the scenes of the tour and her personal life.
In the later part of her career, Madonna yet again pushed the envelope by releasing her “Justify My love” video. This video introduced S&M, bondage, gay and lesbian acts. Although banned by MTV deemed too sexually explicit, it became the highest selling video of all time.

Step Back In Time With 1980′s Fashion
The 1980's were good times on both sides of the pond. When we think back to the 80's we think of new wave, big hair, Pacman, Dallas, Reagan & Thatcher, Charles & Diana, FGTH, Wham!, Back To The Future, Ghostbusters, and the list goes on....
If you are feeling a bit nostalgic for those days - you can hardly deny it, you're reading this, LOL! - why not tog yourself up with some classic 1980's fashion? Of course Madonna was probably the hottest (female) pop star of that decade and today you can buy 80's Madonna costumes that are perfect for when you attend or throw a 1980's theme party.
There are some awesome 80's T shirts that are on the market today that feature some of the other big acts from back then including AC/DC, Iggy Pop, U2, Prince, Michael Jackson, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, another list that just goes on... Who can forget Bob Geldof the charity rock concerts, watched by millions of thousands of fans worldwide? Concerts such as Live Aid, Band Aid and USA for Africa were historical and monumental events.
Then there's television series, again The Racoons, The Dukes Of Hazzard, Diff'rent Strokes, The A Team (all American I notice), yet ANOTHER never ending list...
Desperately Wanting to See Susan?
The 80’s is back! If not in time, then it's certainly in demand - you're here reading this blog. Old clothes thrown out at the beginning of the 90’s are slowly being spotted on the high street again, and the crazy hair style reminiscent of the great boom and bust era are once again all the rage – for some.
The merger of two iconic 80’s themes was attempted back in 2007 with Desperately Seeking Susan the Musical. Theme one, and obvious from the title, it was based on the hit 80’s romantic comedy movie which starred Madonna in 1985. And if that wasn't enough, it featured the back catalogue of Blondie songs in an attempt to get the heart beating and the nostalgia really flowing.
What of the plot? Well Roberta Glass is a suburban New Jersey housewife looking for escape from her boring life, and Susan is a street savvy New York Drifter, who with her boyfriend lead a far from dull life involving jewel heists, magic shows and rock 'n roll.
This classic rite of passage film caught a tidal wave in the 80’s (although the critics panned it - heathens) and the musical suffered the same fate - it too was panned by the critics. When you consider the music that this show was set to, it's a real tragedy that it couldn't sustain more than a two month run between mid October to mid December 2007.
But still, if a show can't pay its way, it's gotta go! Nostalgia don't mean diddly if it can't pay the bills!
80′s Madonna – UK Singles June 1986 – December 1989
After Live To Tell, Madonna went on a run of a further 11 UK chart singles up to and including December 1989's Dear Jessie. Every single went top 10 and a total of 5, Papa Don't Preach (entered chart June 1986), True Blue (October 1986), La Isla Bonita (April 1987), Who's That Girl (July 1987) and Like A Prayer (March 1989) went to number 1.
Of course, she's done loads and loads of stuff since the 80's, but there is no better icon for the 1980's than Ms Ciccone.

80′s Madonna – Live To Tell
So we moved into 1986 and Madonna went for an image change. Gone was all the jewellery and instead of layers and layers of makeup, Madonna wore a much more subtle palette. Live To Tell was actually the last of Madonna's singles that I went out and bought. It is perhaps one of her best singles and one that has stood the test of time, without becoming dated. Great song though it is, Like A Virgin will always sound like 1984 to me, whereas this has a much more timeless appeal.

80′s Madonna – Dress You Up
It's been said before and probably will be again, that our Madonna is 'a little bit woo, a little bit weh'. It's also been said that song lyrics, like any other form of language can be interpreted in anyway the listener or reader chooses, but how on earth could this song have ended up on the Parent Music Resource Center (PMRC)'s list of Filthy Fifteen - you know (or maybe you don't), the original set of songs which they demanded should have those ridiculous Parental Advisory aka Tipper Stickers.
You can understand songs like Prince's Darling Nikki or some of the heavy metal ones like W.A.S.P.'s Animal (F**k Like A Beast) with their obviously unsavoury lyrics, but Dress You Up? Maybe it's me, maybe I am too liberal, but I'd rather be liberal than a reactionary p***k.
Vital Stats:
Entered UK Chart: 7-12-1985
Bought by Me: 14-12-1985

80′s Madonna – Angel
Angel was released considerably later in the UK than it had been in other parts of the world. As noted, Angel had been paired with Into The Groove in the US, but in the UK both had been released separately. It's true that Angel is remembered less well than Into The Groove, even though it must have been considered the stronger of the two when the release strategy was decided. For all of that, it's a typically spiky performance by Madonna.
Vital Stats:
Entered UK Chart: 21-9-1985
Bought by Me: 4-10-1985
Highest Chart Position: 5
Weeks on Chart: 9
80′s Madonna – Into The Groove
Following on from Crazy For You, in an even more radical departure according to territory, this fine single (taken from the insanely under-rated film Desperately Seeking Susan) was only released as a B side in the US but received fully fledged A side status in the UK. And we responded to this great trust placed in us by sending it to number 1 - Madonna's first UK number 1 single.

80′s Madonna – Crazy For You
Madonna's sixth UK singles chart release and a tie in with the Matthew Modine film Vision Quest. It was backed by different songs in different territories. In the UK we had the Sammy Hagar offering I'll Fall In Love Again - a track that joined Crazy For You on the film's soundtrack. This is perhaps my favourite of the early Madonna offerings. It certainly reminds me now of discos in the village hall with Madonna's breathy evocation of 'strangers making the most of the dark...' If only, eh?!
Vital Stats:
Entered UK Chart: 8-6-1985
Bought by Me: 13-7-1985
